As for fueling the insurrectionists’ fire because “who knows what they’ll do?,” the same reasoning would apply to the leaders of the Confederacy. Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee had already levied war against the United States; who knew what else their followers might have done if they were excluded from the ballot?
