Seriously, though, “algorithms” is too broad a brush. What we’re talking about here are, specifically, curation algorithms, and you’re absolutely right that they are the problem. Just as you say, online media would be a whole lot less toxic if everybody were just shown the same content, like in a printed newspaper. It’s the individually tailored curation that’s ripping our social fabric to shreds.
