Pay attention to how often people precede their views with “I feel that . . .” rather than ”I think that . . .”
Feelings and “lived experience” take precedence over reasoning and evidence. Like that poor child in the Yale video who is reduced to tears, her sense of “safety” threatened by the thought of a non-Mexican student wearing a sombrero on Halloween. The solicitous, comforting hugs from her fellow students, physically interposing to shield her from the “disgusting,” “racist” professor.
These people are not interested in engaging with opposing viewpoints, just shouting them down: “This is not a debate.” They fancy themselves “speaking truth to power” when in fact all they want is to overpower the speaking of truth.
