I’m not generally a fan of protectionist policies, but what if we were to impose an import tariff calibrated to the difference in wage rates between foreign and American workers? In other words, remove the incentive to ship jobs offshore and force employers to deal fairly with domestic workers.
By the same token, government single-payer health care and robust Social Security would relieve labor costs of the burden of pension and health insurance benefits. And then let the Invisible Hand do its work.
