I pray for the day when people can recognize [sic spelling 😊] that every person is flawed without therefore automatically condemning everything that person said or did.
Ask some of these armchair pontificators what they would have done in Churchill’s place. The Enigma codes were the crown jewels of the British war effort, the key to defeating Hitler. Suppose Churchill had made the opposite choice, to defend Coventry at the cost of revealing the Enigma secret; what would the consequence then have been for Britain and the overall outcome of the war?
It’s easy to judge a historical figure’s actions from an eighty-year distance and congratulate yourself on your superior morality. It’s not so easy being that historical figure, faced with such excruciating decisions in real time and bearing the brunt of the consequences.
Mind you, I say all this in defense of Churchill, not of Hitler. Those who cannot recognize the monstrosity that was Hitler, even at a distance approaching a century, are the same ones who profess not to recognize the monstrosity that is Donald Trump.
