I have long advocated this same approach for pharmaceuticals. Drug companies justify their monopolistic price gouging by citing their exorbitant R&D costs. Why not have government absorb those costs in the public interest, and make the results available to all? Manufacturers could then compete to produce the product most efficiently and offer it at competitive prices, instead of gouging helpless patients with exclusive patents.
