Crusty old Fowler’s Modern English Usage divides the English-speaking world into five categories:

1. Those who neither know nor care what a split infinitive is, and who will happily write “to really understand” without a care in the world;

2. Those who do not know but care very much, and who will go out of their way to avoid a phantom split infinitive, writing “really to be understood” instead of “to be really understood”;

3. Those who know and condemn;

4. Those who know and approve;

5. Those who know and distinguish, who avoid splitting an infinitive when they can do so gracefully, but will go ahead and split it if the alternative would be worse (“boldly to go where no one has gone before“).

Your statement quoted above seems to put you in category 3; I stand with Fowler in category 5.
